what is biohacking?

Biohacking is a term used to describe do-it-yourself biology. We promise it’s not as scary as it sounds! This process involves making incremental changes to your body, diet and lifestyle to improve your overall health and performance. The concept focuses on self-improvement and wellness, incorporating small yet powerful lifestyle and diet changes into your daily routine.

It allows us to maximise the body’s potential and become the absolute best version of ourselves – and who doesn’t want that?

Biohacking adopts a proactive approach to health. Instead of trying to fix the body once something wrong occurs (like an illness or chronic health issue), the idea is to prevent this from occurring and then go one step further to optimise it. Although there is no such thing as a time machine, research has shown that we have more control over how we age than once thought and there are practices that can enhance our quality of life and keep us younger for longer. However, these tend to sit outside of conventional medicine, even though they have been practised safely and widely in ancient cultures for generations.

Interestingly women make the best biohackers because they are typically more in tune with their bodies. Through our menstrual cycle, women naturally go through changes each month and can use tools and products to manage pain, low energy and cravings.

There are three main types of biohacking to consider (stay with us here…):

Nutrigenomics:

This category refers to the scientific study of how the food you eat interacts with your genes, and how various nutrients can impact how you think, feel and behave. Nutrigenomics is used to learn more about how genes and diet together can impact a person's health and risk of developing diseases.

DIY Biology:

DIY biohacking (also known as garage biology) involves experts in scientific fields sharing biohacking techniques and information with other people who are not experts – this gives them the knowledge to conduct experiments on themselves outside of a constrained environment.

Grinder:

This is a subculture of biohacking that involves optimising the human body with technological gadgets, chemical injections and implants.

At apothercary, we are here to help you make well informed choices on your journey to better health. From supplements, specialised food and drinks to meditation and light therapy tools, our range of handpicked products will support you in the process of biohacking.

Here are some simple examples you can incorporate into your own wellness routine to start your biohacking journey:

 -          Use breathwork to breathe through any anxiety and activate the parasympathetic system for calmness.

-          Try intermittent fasting to reach your ideal weight and health goals.

-          Use a supplement like our Cymbiotika Longevity Mushrooms to improve overall health and immune function.

-          Track your menstrual cycle with an App (we like Flo Health) to start noticing dips in energy and cravings throughout the month.

We encourage you to start small, and keep a daily journal recording your actions and how you feel. If you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you at hello@apothercary.com.au.
